Project Prom 2012

Since 2003, Project Prom has given eligible high school students the opportunity to choose free formal attire from a selection of thousands of donated items. The gowns and other accessories are received through the generosity of retail establishments and the general public. New in 2012, Project Prom for Gentlemen combined an etiquette-refresher dinner with tuxedo rentals for young men who are attending their prom.

Eligible students* are assisted by a personal shopper to select their favorite gown. Entrance to the shop is on a first-come-first-served basis. Young ladies are not required to pre-register.

Young men: Four Project Prom for Gentlemen Etiquette Dinners were conducted in April at the Human Service Building (Get Directions). Eligible students* had a chance to brush up on their etiquette skills while enjoying a catered meal and received an on-site tuxedo fitting and a voucher for a free tuxedo rental. Pre-registration was required. Young men were registered through their caseworker at DHS or at a DHS-contracted provider agency.

NOTE: Students were asked to be prepared to show their valid student ID and proof of eligibility.

About Project Prom

The DHS Office of Community Relations started Project Prom in 2003, recognizing that the prom is an expensive evening and that many young men and women might be denied the experience as a result. In Project Prom’s first year, more than 650 dresses and numerous shoes and other accessories were collected and offered free of charge to high school students served by DHS. Thanks to the project, 45 students received dresses and attended their prom in style. Originally housed at the Parental Stress Center in East Liberty, the Project Prom Shop has relocated twice, first to the Lower Lobby of the Human Services Building at One Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh, and in June 2007, to the upper level of Century III Mall in West Mifflin.

The location is equipped with dressing rooms and staffed with personal shoppers for several days in early spring. When the gown giveaway is completed, formalwear is made available for public sale to raise funds to purchase tuxedo rental gift certificates and gowns in much-needed sizes. The success of Project Prom rests on the generosity of donors, both individuals and retail stores, who contribute clean, currently styled and undamaged formalwear and gift certificates for young women and men.
