PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato will hold a town hall meeting from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center at 7600 Grand Avenue on Neville Island to discuss the new County Sports & Athletics Complex at Montour Junction.
“Our goal is to transform a vacant brownfield into a world-class recreational facility,” said Onorato. “Saturday’s meeting is a great opportunity for residents to provide comments and share their thoughts on programming and recreational needs.”
The Sports Legacy Foundation is donating 78 acres of land in Coraopolis, Moon Twp. and Robinson Twp. to the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County. The site, commonly referred to as Montour Junction, is bordered by Pa. Route 51 to the west and south, the CSX Railroad and Coraopolis Bridge to the north, and residential areas to the east. The head of the Montour Trail is approximately one-fifth of a mile to the south. Montour Run, a stocked trout stream, bisects the property.
The property was formerly owned and operated by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad and requires some environmental remediation. Once the environmental work is completed, the property will be conveyed to the Allegheny County Department of Parks and transformed into a facility that offers nontraditional playing fields, such as rugby, soccer and lacrosse. Plans also include trout fishing access and a mile-long extension of the Montour Trail.
“I want to thank the Sports Legacy Foundation again for its vision and for partnering with the County to add to our parks, trails and greenways,” added Onorato. “Allegheny County has more than 12,000 acres of parkland, and our trail system continues to grow along our rivers and throughout our communities. This property will be a great addition and wonderful asset to our region.”
Onorato encourages residents who cannot attend Saturday’s town hall meeting to send comments to
